I'm stuck in between..
In between this..

and this..

Now, the Asus EEE pc only costs about $600 with of course the downside of only a 4GB Solid State Disk, a 512MB ram which is upgradable to 2GB, runs on a Linux OS which can be changed to Windows XP. The upside of it is, its small, freaking small for a lappy. Its only 0.92kg and its considered cheap compared to other lappys!
While, the oh so chio Apple Macbook costs $1788. Has a 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 1GB of RAM which i think can be upgraded right? A 80GB Harddrive and runs on the oh so chio Leopard OS. The only few downsides of it i can think of is that its bigger, more expensive than the EEE, if i want the black colour one, i would have to fork out another $700 more albeit better specs.
Hmm, as i was talking to Ken, i might wana move my whole PC to the living room and just use a lappy in the room which allows me to use my computer desk as a study one too. If you've seen my desk, i have no space at all to put books or whatsoever. Another option i considered was to buy a bluetooth keyboard and mouse, so when i wana study, i have to just shift the keyboard away and TADA! Study study!
Anyways, i guess i would have a budget of about 2k when i want to get a lappy which probably will be 3 - 6 months time? So.. I mainly want to use it for school actually, doing Powerpoint presentations, Word documents and excel spreadsheet. To cut short, Office related stuff. I also want to be able to surf wirelessly with the lappy, either outside or on the comfort of my bed. If the EEE pc is capable of it, i don't see a need in getting another 'full-fledged' PC.
So yea, advice advice from you all will be greatly appreciated!
Have a good Tuesday!
wah, its quite hard to compare these two sicne they are two very different computers.
ReplyDeleteMy opinions:
Asus
- I can't imagine looking at a 7" screen.
+ its very budget and throws in quite a bit of stuff
+ very light and portable
- No CD rom drive
- Only small amount of HDD space which means you might have to carry around extra storage devices
- Might not "replace" your desktop
- tiny keyboard might get irritating
All said and done, if you are tied for a budget, and can imagine yourself carrying your laptop around a lot just doing work, the asus might be a good choice.
Macbook
- expensive?
- in comparison to the eee pc it is heavier
+ faster processor
+ it comes with a fuller set of applications meaning you prob can totally "replace" your desktop
- still, its a bit pricey
well, not wanting to appear biased towards the macbook here, but then if your budget does stretch to 2K, and you really want to replace your desktop, i'd suggest getting the macbook.
however, having said all that, there are other brands of laptops around the macbook price which do just about the same thing.
So i guess it all boils down to preference and what you intend to be doing with your laptop? And if you say that you will be using it mainly for school work etc, then why not hold the purchase off till school is about to start?
oh well, just my 2 cents worth.
hmm.. but then again, if you don't really need a laptop, why not just get a keyboard tray for your desk?
ReplyDeletesomething like:
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/50086690
then maybe you can get a small side table or find somewhere to put the other stuff thats on your desk.
oh well, just more suggestions! =)
Thanks for the suggestions, detailed comparison and the email man.. Sorry just now you msg me online i was talking to my uncle so didn't reply..
ReplyDeleteAnyway, i got to play around a bit with the EEE today and hmm, seems not bad. They were using Linux OS with firefox as browser and openoffice as their Office. I've done some surfing on my iTouch and the screen on the EEE beats it hands down la haha. Quite comfortable with it..
As for the macbook, yea it can really just replace my whole desktop. It looks chio and i have a new kinda system to play with! So yea, that's why the dilemma haha
I still haven't worked out a plan on how to shift my whole cpu/monitor/2 modems into my living room yet, will have to check with my uncle if he's cool with it first. Anyway, checked out a bluetooth wireless keyboard today also. Wah freaking costs $269 man. I don't think its a worthy investment as yet.
The keyboard tray looks like a good idea, will pop by ikea one day to see if they stock it. Now i know why they built tables with keyboard trays lol and i'm not kidding man, i always thought it was just built like that cos all computer desks were meant to be built like that.
Right now just doing some research on the lappys i'm interested in, i believe there will be another IT fair somewhere in June. Should be getting it then as most schools that i considered starts in July. Heck, i might not even need a lappy for my course!
hmm.. what about wireless keyboards?
ReplyDeletei think you can get a kb+mouse set for a lot less...
well just be sure u are comfortable using the eee pc as a replacement i guess. I haven't had a chance to try it out so i won't know. But for the mac i can tell u it can because i have one.
also, because the asus eee pc runs on an intel chip, u might be able to try using the hacked version of macOSX on it and see how it goes. Though with a 900mhz processor i'm not sure how smooth it'll run.
